The 1921 Census

The 1921 Census was taken on 19 June 1921, after being delayed for two months by industrial unrest, although all the forms have the original date on them.

It was the first census to have “divorced” as an option for marital status.  It also asked working people to provide details of their employer.

Whilst you can search the census for free on Findmypast (https://www.findmypast.co.uk/1921-census), there is a charge of £3.50 to view / download the images of the household return and other accompanying paper work.  A transcript can be viewed for a smaller fee of £2.50.  Alternativley the 1921 census can be viewed / downloaded free by visiting The National Archives at Kew.

Looking at the results of various “free” searches of the 1921 census with Chalgrove in mind the following figures can be determined:

  • 454  people gave Chalgrove, Oxfordshire as their birthplace, of these 309 are no longer living in Chalgrove.

Note:  This figure is probably higher, since in the index there are people indexed with a birthplace of Oxfordshire and some of these may have been born in Chalgrove.

  • The population of Chalgrove was 396 comprising:

    • 104 Households:
      • 91 male heads
      • 13 female heads
      • 7 heads of households are single men
      • 1 head of household is a sinlge women
      • 22 head or households are widows or widowers
    • 217 males
    • 179 females.
    • 295 are listed in the index as having been born within Oxfordshire.

      Notes:
        • It is not possible to determine exactly how many where born in Chalgrove, since there are people indexed with a birthplace of Oxfordshire and some of these may have been born in Chalgrove.

        • This does not include those who’s birthplace has been mis-indexed, I’ve seen a few entries where birthplace is “Chalgrave, Bedfordshire” but without looking at the actual images it is not possible to tell whether this is a transcription error.
    • One resident gives Australia for her birthplace.
    • 105 gave their marital status as single.
    • Nobody gave their marital status as divorced.
    • Two people give their occupation as School Teacher – these are:

Bernard Swift – born 1885 in Ardingly, Sussex
Beatrice Lilian Swift – born: Burgess Hill, Sussex
